What Is an Online Ruler?
An online ruler — also called a virtual ruler or screen ruler — turns your display into a measuring tool. Instead of hunting for a physical ruler, you open this page and measure directly against your screen in centimetres, millimetres, inches, or pixels. It is useful for the small measurements that come up constantly — checking whether a part fits, sizing a photo, measuring a screw, or working out whether something will slot into a gap.
Once calibrated it behaves as an actual size ruler: a centimetre on screen is a real centimetre against the object you are holding. You can use it as an online ruler in inches or switch to ruler online cm mode at any time, depending on which units the job needs.
The catch with every screen ruler is that browsers measure in CSS pixels, not millimetres, and the relationship between the two changes from device to device. That is why calibration matters, and why a ruler that skips it will quietly give you the wrong answer.
How to Use This Ruler
- Calibrate once. Hold a bank card against the dashed outline and drag the calibration slider until the two widths match exactly. Every standard card is 85.6 mm wide, which makes it a reliable global reference.
- Pick your unit. Use the cm, in, or px buttons, or press 1, 2, or 3.
- Measure. Hold the object against the ruler along the edge of the strip and read off the value.
- Use the guide line (press G) to mark an exact position, and fullscreen (press F) when you need the maximum available length.
Your calibration and unit choice are saved in your browser, so you only need to do this once per device.
How Screen Calibration Works
Screens differ in pixel density — measured in PPI, or pixels per inch. A typical desktop monitor sits near 96 PPI, while a modern phone can exceed 400 PPI. Browsers deliberately hide this behind a normalised CSS pixel, so a page cannot simply ask the operating system how big the screen physically is.
Calibrating against a known-size object solves this directly. Once you tell the ruler how many pixels correspond to 85.6 mm, every other measurement follows from that single ratio. Without calibration the tool assumes 96 PPI, which is usually close on a laptop and noticeably wrong on a high-density phone.
The same calibration lets you measure screen size itself. If you know your display's pixel dimensions, dividing by the calibrated PPI gives you its physical width and height — handy when a spec sheet is nowhere to be found.
Showing the Ruler in Actual Size
"Actual size" means one centimetre on screen is a true centimetre against the object you are holding. That is not the default state of any web page — browsers have no idea how physically large your display is — so it only becomes true after you calibrate.
This is the single thing most online ruler actual size pages get wrong. They render a ruler at a fixed 96 PPI and call it life-size, which is roughly correct on an older desktop monitor and badly wrong on a modern phone, where densities often exceed 400 PPI. A ruler that is 30% short is worse than no ruler, because you will trust it.
Once you have calibrated here, the setting is saved for that device. Return next week and it is still true to size — no repeat setup.
Centimetres, Millimetres and Inches
The tool switches between three scales, and your choice is remembered:
- Online ruler in cm — long numbered ticks at each centimetre, mid ticks at 5 mm, small ticks at 1 mm. The default for most of the world.
- Online ruler in mm — the same scale read at millimetre precision, which is what you want for small parts, beads, and fasteners.
- Online ruler in inches — divided into sixteenths, the standard fractional scale on a US tape measure. Long ticks mark whole inches, so it reads like a digital ruler in inches rather than a decimal approximation.
There is also a pixel mode, which is useful for design work where you need a digital ruler measuring CSS pixels rather than physical units. Press 1, 2, or 3 to switch instantly.
Using It on a Phone
A phone screen makes a perfectly good ruler for small objects, and it is the device you actually have on you. Two caveats worth knowing:
- You get about 6 cm in portrait. Rotate to landscape and you roughly double the usable length.
- Calibrate on the phone itself. Calibration is stored per device, so a setting made on your laptop does not carry across.
Because everything runs in the browser, there is nothing to install — no app, no permissions, no camera access. It also keeps working if you lose signal mid-measurement.
Accuracy and Limitations
Calibrated carefully, this ruler is generally accurate to within about a millimetre — good enough for everyday measuring, DIY, crafts, and checking part sizes. It is not suitable for anything where a precise tolerance matters: machining, medical measurement, or engineering work all need a physical instrument.
Two things reduce accuracy in practice:
- Browser zoom. If your page zoom is not at 100%, recalibrate — zoom changes the pixel-to-millimetre ratio.
- Screen length. You can only measure as far as your display reaches. Phones cap out around 6 cm in portrait; rotate to landscape for more.

One thing this tool is not built for: ring sizing. That needs a purpose-made gauge with its own sizing chart, and measuring a ring against a flat screen ruler gives unreliable results. A dedicated tool for that is a better answer than stretching this one.
Tips for Better Measurements
- Calibrate at 100% browser zoom, and recalibrate if you change it.
- Look straight at the screen — viewing at an angle introduces parallax error.
- Line the object up with the zero mark, not the physical screen edge.
- Use the guide line to mark the end point before reading the value.
- Measure twice. It costs two seconds and catches most mistakes.
