Why Area Division Gets Wallpaper Wrong
The wallpaper calculator ranking #1 for this question divides a pattern-adjusted
area by the area of one roll: rolls = (wall width × adjusted height) ÷
(roll width × roll length). Fetched directly, that is exactly the formula
Omnicalculator publishes for its own wallpaper tool. It is the right formula for a
material you can cut into any shape — fabric off a bolt, sheet metal, anything
continuously divisible. Wallpaper is not that. Every strip has to be a single,
uncut length running from floor to ceiling, and a roll only yields as many
full-length strips as fit end to end before it runs out. Whatever is left over —
often more than a metre — is too short to be a strip and gets thrown away.
Run one real wall through both methods. Wall: 4 m wide × 2.4 m high. Wallpaper: a Euro roll (10.05 m × 0.53 m) with a 0.64 m pattern repeat, straight match.

Two rolls against the correct three is a 33% under-order. The gap is the 10.05 − (3 × 2.56) = 2.37 m left on every roll after its third strip — real, unusable offcut that the area formula quietly counts as available material toward the next roll. What Pattern Repeat Means (and How to Find It)
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance from one point in a design to the next place that exact point occurs again — the gap from the top of one motif to the top of the next identical motif directly below it. It is printed on the wallpaper's spec sheet or the roll label itself, usually as a plain number in centimetres or inches: "repeat: 64 cm" or "pattern repeat: 25 in". Papers with a large motif — big florals, damasks — tend to have a large repeat, sometimes 60 cm or more; small geometric or textured patterns often have a repeat under 15 cm, or none at all.
The repeat matters because you cannot start a fresh strip wherever a roll happens to
run out — the design has to line up with the strip next to it, so every strip's usable
length gets rounded up to the next whole repeat. A wall a few centimetres taller than
a clean multiple of the repeat still consumes a whole extra repeat's worth of length
per strip. That rounding is the adjustedDrop step in the calculator above,
and it is the single most common thing a naive calculation skips.
Straight Match, Half-Drop, and Random Match
A half-drop wallpaper calculator has to compute the offset directly rather than guess at it with a flat percentage — that's exactly what the tool above does whenever you switch match type, and the three options are:
Straight match lines the pattern up horizontally: the same point in the design sits at the same height on every strip across the wall. It is the most common match type and the least wasteful, because every strip's cut point is identical.
Half-drop match shifts the pattern on every second strip down by exactly half the repeat, so the motif steps diagonally rather than lining up in rows — common on damasks and larger florals, where a straight match would look too rigidly gridded. It typically costs a little more wallpaper than straight match with the identical repeat, because a matched pair of strips has to leave an extra half-repeat of roll length spare to keep the offset correct. For a 2.4 m wall with a 0.5 m repeat cut from a 10.05 m roll, for example, a straight match yields 4 strips per roll; the identical roll cut for half-drop yields only 3 — one fewer strip from the same length of paper, purely from the extra half-repeat the offset consumes. The calculator above computes this directly for your own numbers rather than adding a flat percentage.
Random match (sometimes "no match required") has no repeat to align — either the pattern is irregular enough that no two strips need to line up, or there is no repeating motif at all. It is the least wasteful option: every strip only needs to be cut to the wall's exact height, with no rounding up for a repeat cycle.
Euro Roll vs US Roll Wallpaper: the Real Numbers
A Euro roll is 10.05 m long and 53 cm wide — about 5.3 m² (≈57 sq ft) per roll. Farrow & Ball's own published wallpaper guide states its rolls as "10 m and 53cm wide"; other European suppliers state the fuller 10.05 m industry-standard figure. Both round to the same coverage, and it's the roll size used throughout the calculator's default preset and every worked example on this page.
A US roll, by the commonly cited nominal single-roll spec, is 33 ft (10 m) long and 20.5 in (52 cm) wide — about 56 sq ft, close to but not identical to a Euro roll's width. The complication is that many US manufacturers sell wallpaper priced "by the single roll" but ship it as one continuous double-length roll, so what arrives is not always what the width and length on the shelf label suggest — check your specific product's shipped format before ordering by roll count. Because a Euro roll (53 cm) and a US roll (52 cm) are close but not equal, mixing the two on one job misaligns strip edges — pick one and stay with it for the whole room.
Why Under-Ordering Wallpaper Is Worse Than Under-Ordering Paint
Run short on paint and the fix is trivial: buy another can of the same colour code and it matches, because paint is mixed to a formula at the point of sale. Wallpaper is printed in batches, and colour can shift slightly between print runs — even for the exact same design and colourway — in a way that's invisible on a single swatch but visible on a wall once two batches sit side by side. That's why every roll carries a batch or run number on its label, and why buying all the rolls for one room from the same batch, at the same time, is standard advice from every wallpaper retailer.
Under-order by even one roll on the drops-per-roll method above, and there is a real chance the replacement comes from a different print run — a visible seam of mismatched colour exactly where you can least hide it. That is the practical cost of the area-division shortcut: it doesn't just under-order paper, it creates a batch-matching problem that a correct calculation avoids entirely.
Measuring Rooms With Doors, Windows, and Stairs
Add every wall in the room as its own entry, with its own width and height, rather than measuring the room's total perimeter as one number — strip counts round up per wall, and merging widths together loses that rounding and under-counts. A chimney breast or an alcove is a wall too: give it its own entry rather than folding its width into the wall it interrupts.
For doors and windows, only mark an opening as full-height in the calculator if it genuinely removes a strip's worth of need — most doors qualify, because the sliver of wall above a door frame is rarely worth a separate cut. Most windows don't: a typical window covers roughly the middle half of a wall's height, so you still need full-height strips either side of it, with the sections above and below the window cut from those same strips rather than skipped. Marking a window as full-height would overstate the saving and under-order paper.
Stairwells are the case a single average height gets wrong, and a wallpaper calculator for stairs has to handle it directly rather than average it away. The wall alongside a staircase follows the rake of the stairs, so its height changes continuously — shorter where the stairs begin, taller by the time they reach the landing, often by a metre or more across one flight. Treat each distinct height along the run as its own wall entry. This calculator groups walls by height and works out the adjusted drop and strips-per-roll separately for each group, which is exactly the adjustment a room-wide average height can't make — and on the tallest sections, it's also worth checking that a standard roll length is even long enough to yield one full strip before you buy.

Buy a little more than the calculator says if this is a first attempt at hanging wallpaper, if the room has several openings or an irregular stairwell wall, or if the pattern repeat is large relative to your wall height. A spare partial roll is cheap insurance against a mismatched-batch reorder two-thirds of the way through a room.
